Historical Pictures of the City of Medford

Medford is a historic place. First settled in 1630 and incorporated a city in 1892. People have been settling in Medford for about 375 years. Medford, meaning the "ford by the meadow" takes its name from the wide meadows and fords carved out by the Mystic "Mistik" river. Our city was important in early colonial history as one of the gateways to areas North and Northwest of Boston. A mere 3 miles from Boston's Charlestown border and about 6 from the State House, Medford provided a key bridge to cross the Mystic River (See the Craddock Bridge below). Many thanks to people who have sent in these pictures. Please continue doing the same by sending to: jjmclean@medfordpolice.com
